EDUCATION NEWS

  • An online platform ranked the 10 best elementary schools in South Carolina and all top spots belong to the York County district, allowing the Fort Mill School district to claim the list—Gold Hill Elementary placed first, with Tega Cay, Pleasant Knoll, Kings Town and River Trail leading the top five and Doby’s Bridge, Sugar Creek, Springfield, Orchard Park and Fort Mill completing the ranking.  WRHI
  • Fort Mill School District announced Dr. Emily McQuay as the first principal of the new Flint Hill Middle School, and she brings 20+ years of experience from her time at Fort Mill Middle where her leadership earned a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Lighthouse Award. She will now build a strong and supportive school community at the new campus.  Tega Cay Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dr. James "Britt" Blackwell was sworn in to the South Carolina Department of Transportation Commission on March 20, 2025 after being confirmed by the Senate and House following Governor McMaster's December appointment. He served on the Rock Hill School Board, State Board of Education, and York County Council (where he founded the I-77 Alliance to boost regional development) and joined Commissioner Sel Hemingway, Jr. at his first Commission meeting.  WRHI

SPORTS NEWS

  • Fort Mill's bats came alive on Wednesday night as the Yellow Jackets won 11-3 over Clover to clinch the series in Region 3-5A baseball — outfielder Jacob Pettit hit three home runs. The teams will finish the series today at Clover with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.  Tega Cay Sun
  • On March 19, Fort Mill’s track teams won decisive victories over Clover in both the boys’ and girls’ meets—led by standout performances from Connor Demmerle and Mia Williams. Their wins in sprints, distance events and relays underscored the teams’ strength and depth.  Tega Cay Sun
  • High school athletes in South Carolina will soon be allowed to transfer schools once without facing immediate ineligibility as approved by athletic directors at a meeting in Charleston (vote 29 to 4). The policy applies if transfers occur before practices start for the 2025 to 2026 school year and will require a 22-day wait for seniors transferring in the 2026 to 2027 school year.  WRHI
  • High school athletes in South Carolina will soon be allowed one school transfer without facing immediate ineligibility after a vote of 29+4 by state athletic administrators in Charleston. The rule takes effect for the 2025-26 school year and allows transfers before practice starts while later moves incur a 30-day penalty or missing half the season's games, with a 22-day penalty for seniors starting next year.  Tega Cay Sun
  • At the SCAAA Spring Conference this week, Tri-County athletic directors were recognized for their leadership in school sports. Rock Hill’s AD Eric Rollings won the 5A Classification and Region AD awards—while Lewisville’s Kirk Cannon received the 1A Region AD honor and Buford’s Michael Belk was named 2A Principal of the Year.  WRHI
