CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On April 10th, York County Sheriff's deputies arrested Jaylen Richard Reid after he entered the Publix at 928 Gold Hill Road armed with a semi-automatic weapon and locked himself in a staff office, causing customers and employees to be evacuated+ he faces charges for failure to stop for blue lights, resisting arrest, unlawful firearm possession on school property, and trespassing. - ➤ Molly Bennett was named Fort Mill High School Athlete of the Week after a three-game stretch with the Yellow Jackets girls lacrosse team—she scored 14 goals on 14 shots and recorded 17 groundballs, 22 draw controls, and 10 caused turnovers as the recognition was sponsored by the Athletic Booster Club and Super Chix Fort Mill. - ➤ At the Teacher of the Year banquet on April 10 at the Founders Dairy Barn on the Anne Springs Close Greenway, Fort Mill named five District Honor Roll Teachers—Katie Jenkinson from Banks Trail Middle, Sarah Gilreath from Doby’s Bridge Elementary, Lauren Robinson from Orchard Park Elementary, Samantha Rigby from River Trail Elementary and Michelle Berisford from Sugar Creek Elementary. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The South Carolina House of Representatives approved the South Carolina Hands-Free and Distracted Driving Act with an 85—25 vote, moving the bill to the Senate where it will ban handheld cellphone use while still allowing Bluetooth and speaker phone mode. If enacted, the law will fine first offenders $100 and repeat offenders $200, and law enforcement will issue warnings during the first six months instead of fines. Tega Cay Sun
- ➤ The Fort Mill Police Department announced today it is launching a new Bicycle Unit to boost patrol efficiency and strengthen community relations. Officers will patrol neighborhoods, business parks, and events including the South Carolina Strawberry Festival and Annual Christmas Parade. Tega Cay Sun
