COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kelsey McGuire, a 21-year-old former Tega Cay resident, ran the Boston Marathon earlier this year and finished in 3 hours and 6 minutes while raising $4,650 for brain cancer research in memory of her aunt—she received strong support from the Fort Mill community.  Tega Cay Sun

CRIME NEWS

  • Anthony Drayton, 38, from Simpsonville, was sentenced to 12 years in prison after a York County jury found him guilty of entering First Citizens Bank in Fort Mill on September 29 using a disguise—he wore a wig and fake beard while demanding about $1,200 and had been on parole for a prior robbery.  Tega Cay Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At its May 6 meeting, the Fort Mill School Board recognized student achievements and reviewed a financial report that showed a positive cash flow of $31.6 million—along with updates on nutrition services and the ongoing superintendent search. Board member Lipi Pratt said interviews will follow with a new superintendent expected to begin in July—while a proposed increase in meal prices awaits a board vote.  WRHI
  • Students from the Fort Mill School District earned statewide recognition after a competitive audition by being selected for the prestigious South Carolina All-State Bands. The selections include (15 middle school students in the Junior Band, 7 high school musicians in the Clinic Band, and 12 in the Senior Band), reflecting strong local music education.  Tega Cay Sun

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A report from the University of South Carolina Public Health School claims that the Silfab Solar facility in Fort Mill could expose over 53,000 people to major chemical risks in a worst-case scenario. Silfab Solar Director of Operations Greg Basden responded to the claims in an interview with WRHI while Fort Mill Schools said it has engaged an independent firm to assess risks at local school sites.  WRHI

SPORTS NEWS

  • On May 7, Catawba Ridge softball opened the 5A playoffs by beating Fort Mill 15 to 0 after a one-hitter from Keira O’Brien — the team improved to a 24 to 2 record and will host Gaffney on May 9. Also on May 7, Nation Ford won the Fort Mill Championship golf event and Fort Mill’s boys soccer lost 2 to 1 in their state playoff debut, ending the season at 9 to 11.  Fort Mill Prep Sports
  • High school football teams in Fort Mill released their 2025 varsity schedules, and each will play important local rivalries during the season. The schedules show key matchups such as Fort Mill vs. Catawba Ridge on Sept. 19 and Fort Mill vs. Nation Ford on Oct. 31 — games expected to draw strong local support.  Tega Cay Sun
  • Fort Mill High School, Nation Ford High School and Catawba Ridge High School released their 2025 varsity football schedules that list key rivalries on Sept. 19, Oct. 17 and Oct. 31, which may affect playoff chances. The schedules list games starting Aug. 22 + give local fans a look at a competitive fall season.  WRHI
