CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Justin Lee Payne—31 from Rock Hill—was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to fentanyl trafficking, following an arrest by York County Sheriff’s deputies—who recovered over 280 grams of fentanyl and 4 grams of methamphetamine—and he will serve a four-year court-ordered supervision after his release. - ➤ Law enforcement warned that criminals are using jugging—targeting bank customers after cash withdrawals by following them to steal money or break into vehicles—and urged Fort Mill residents to remain alert, change their route if they see suspicious vehicles, and call 911 if needed. WRHI
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ York County 4-H reached a milestone with the registration of its 600th youth member for the 2024 to 2025 program year — setting a new participation record and showing strong community support. The program, part of the Clemson Cooperative Extension Service, offers hands-on learning in agriculture, science, healthy living and civic engagement for youths aged 5 to 18. WRHI
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At its June 2 meeting, York County Council approved two rezoning ordinances for Mt Gallant Road and Corporate Boulevard, finalized the FY 2026 operating and capital budgets, and dissolved the York County Recreation Tax District effective Dec. 31. Council members also approved incentive agreements and contract renewals — while addressing public concerns over the Silfab solar panel facility and honoring retiring School Resource Officer Tanya Bennett as they swore in Whitney Cobas for the Board of Disabilities and Special Needs. - ➤ The South Carolina Department of Agriculture inspected 204 food establishments in York County in May and found most received A grades while six—some in Fort Mill and Rock Hill—earned B ratings for violations such as improper cold holding and blocked sinks; follow-up inspections corrected issues for two restaurants while pending for four. - ➤ On June 2, Fort Mill Post 43 seniors opened their American Legion baseball season with a 12 to 0 win over Winnsboro Post 16 as Ben Chuttey pitched effectively — Jacob Pettit hit a three run home run in the fifth inning.
