COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Humane Society of York County in Fort Mill has named Gus Gus and Janice as this week's adoptable pets. Gus Gus is a calm 7.5-year-old cat who has waited nearly five months for a home, and Janice is a lively terrier mix who has made great progress after being a stray — both are ready for new families.  Tega Cay Sun

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Museum of the Waxhaws will host a two-day Battle of Charlotte Living History Weekend on August 30-31 where reenactors bring the American Revolution to life — showcasing a reenactment of the Battle of Charlotte and demonstrations of 18th century daily life. Tickets are available online and the event will run rain or shine.  Tega Cay Sun
  • Model A Brewing in Tega Cay will host its annual Oktoberfest celebration on Saturday, September 27 — the event will last 11 hours and feature live Oompah music from 1 to 5 p.m, a special release of its award-winning Märzen Vest Weather, and an authentic German menu at 1175 Stonecrest Boulevard.  Tega Cay Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Winthrop hosts its 140th convocation at Byrnes—its first event held there since renovations—bringing together students and faculty for a milestone celebration.  WRHI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Carolina will enforce a new hands‑free driving law on September 1st that makes it illegal for drivers to hold mobile phones or other electronic devices while driving—motorists may use hands‑free features for calls, GPS, and emergencies. Fines will start at $25 for a first offense, then increase to $50 for a second offense and $100 plus two points for further violations as law enforcement aims to reduce distracted driving.  Tega Cay Sun
  • South Carolina’s new hands-free driving law will take effect on September 1 and makes it illegal for drivers to hold their electronic devices while driving. The Highway Patrol will step up enforcement with fines starting at $25 for a first offense, $50 for a second offense, and $100 with two points for later offenses as officials hope the policy will reduce distracted driving.  WRHI

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Fort Mill High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams swept the 5000-meter events at the 2025 WNC Carnival—winning team scores of 79 for the boys and 38 for the girls. Their strong performance marked an early-season statement as they prepared for conference competition later this fall.  Tega Cay Sun
  • Fort Mill girls’ golf team beat the Indian Land Warriors by one stroke 176—177 on Monday, Aug. 25 at Tega Cay Golf Club, improving to a 2-0 record. They will face a new opponent on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at the Palmetto Preview.  Fort Mill Prep Sports
