- ➤ A York County jury declared former Chester County deputy Evan Hawthorne guilty of murder in the case of a retired Rock Hill police lieutenant killed four years ago—investigators said Hawthorne followed the officer from a bar to his apartment and was later seen leaving covered in blood. WRHI
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Fort Mill students scored above state averages on the SC Ready and End-of-Course tests with more than 80% proficiency in English and gains in math scores; the district will review detailed results at an upcoming board meeting — showing a strong commitment to academic excellence. Tega Cay Sun
- ➤ The South Carolina Department of Education announced the Palmetto Math Project to boost math skills statewide by aiming for at least 75% of students to be at or above grade level by 2030. All public schools will receive free five-year access to Zearn Math—an interactive digital platform with over 1,000 lessons to support learning in and outside the classroom. Tega Cay Sun

- ➤ On Sept.2, the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets swept the Region 3-5A cross-country meet at Anne Springs Close Greenway — winning the girls’ race with 17 points and the boys’ race by a two-point margin. - ➤ Fort Mill, Nation Ford and Catawba Ridge high schools are set to host sports events this week — Catawba Ridge hosts girls varsity golf today at Fort Mill Golf Course while Fort Mill and Nation Ford will hold volleyball and football games on Thursday and Friday, with swimming meets planned for Saturday.
